The Legend of Saint Clare - 319

would be better to proceed more slowly in these matters, the Mass of the Dead was celebrated.

10Then, when the Supreme Pontiff with the group of prelates and cardinals was seated, the Bishop of Ostia, taking as his theme "Vanity of vanities," Eccl 1:2 eulogized this outstanding woman, contemptuous of vanity, in a celebrated sermon.

48. 11The Cardinal priests then gathered with devout respect for the holy funeral and completed the customary rites over the body of the virgin. 12Finally, because they did not judge it safe or fitting to leave such a precious trust so far from the citizens, they carried it with hymns and [songs of] praise, the sound of trumpets and solemn rejoicing, and brought it honorably to San Giorgio.

13This is also the site
where the body of the holy Father Francis was buried
so that he who had prepared the way of life while she lived
also prepared—as if by foreknowledge—the place for
her death.
14Afterward a gathering of many peoples came to the tomb
of the virgin
praising God and saying: Lk 2:13
15"Truly holy, truly gloriously,
she reigns with the angels,
she who has received such honor from all on earth.
16First among the poor ladies
who has led untold numbers to penance,
untold numbers to life,
intercede with Christ for us !"
17After a few days,
Agnes, called to the wedding feast of the Lamb,
followed her sister to the eternal delights
18where both daughters of Sion,
sisters by nature, grace, and the Kingdom,
rejoice in God without end.
19And in fact,
Agnes received that consolation
which Clare had promised her
before she departed.

Legenda Sanctae Clarae, Fontes Franciscani, p. 2442

8Respondente viro eminentissimo domino Ostiense, morosius in his fore agendum missa de mortuis celebratur.

ubi sancti Patris Francisci corpus primo conditum fuerat;
ut qui viam vitae viventi paraverat
etiam morienti locum quodam praesagio
praepararet.
4Factus est proinde concursus populorum multorum ad tumulum
Virginis,
laudantium Deum atque dicentium:
5Vere sancta,
vere gloriosa
regnat cum angelis,
quae tantum ab hominibus honorem sumit in terris.
6Intercede pro nobis ad Christum
primiceria pauperum dominarum,
quae innumeros ad paenitentiam,
innumeros conduxisti ad vitam.
7Paucis interiectis diebus,
Agnes ad Agni nuptias evocata,
sororem Claram ad aeternas delicias subsecuta est:
8ubi ambae Sion filiae,
natura, gratia et regno germanae,
et Deo iubilant sine fine.
9Et vero
consolationem illam,
quam Clara promisit Agneti,
antequam migraret accepit.
