The Remembrance of the Desire of a Soul (1245-1247) - 418

205The brothers weresometimessurprised that hedid not often visit such holy handmaids of Christ in his bodily presence, Col 2:5 but he would say: "Don't imagine, dear brothers, that I don't love them fully. For if it were a crime to cherish them in Christ, wouldn't it be even worse to have joined them to Christ? Not calling them would not have been harmful, but not to care for them after calling them would be the height of cruelty. But I am giving you an example, that as I do, soshould you also do. Jn 13:15 I don't want one volunteering to visit them, but rather command that those who are unwilling and very reluctant should be assigned to their service, as long as they are spiritual men Hos 9:7 tested by a longstanding, worthy way of life."

Chapter CLVI
HOW HE REPROVED SOME OF THE BROTHERS
WHO WENT FREELY TO MONASTERIES

206On one occasion a brother who had two daughters of a very holy life in a certain monastery said that he would gladly bring to that place a poor littl e gift which the saint was sending. But the saint scolded him harshly, indeed, using words which are best not repeated here, and sent the gift with someone else who had refused, although not to the point of obstinacy.

Another brother went to a monastery in winter, for reasons of compassion, unaware of the saint's prohibition about going. When the saint found out about this, he made him walk naked for many miles in the snow and bitter cold.

Chapter CLVII
PREACHING MORE BY EXAMPLE THAN BY WORD

207While the holy father was staying at San Damiano, he was pestered by his vicar with repeated requests that he should present the word of God Jn 3:34 to his daughters, and he finally gave in to his insistence. The Ladies gathered as usual to hear the word of God, Jn 8:47 but no lessto seetheir father, and he raised hiseyestoheaven, Is 51:6 Mt 6:21 where he always had his heart, and began to pray to Christ. Then he had ashes brought and made a circle with them round himself on the floor, and then put the rest on hisown head. 1 Mc 3:47
