of this he was so touched by God and inspired to leave the world, that he suddenly came out from his palace and in fervor of spirit ran toward Saint Francis and coming up to him, as he was still in prayer, knelt down at his feet and with great urgency and devotion begged him to be pleased to receive him to do penance together with him. Then Saint Francis, seeing that his prayer had been heard by God, and that what he desired was what that gentleman was asking with great urgency, he got up in fervor and joy of spirit and embraced and kissed the man, devoutly thanking God, who had added to his company such a knight. And that gentleman said to Saint Francis: "What do you command me to do, my father? See, I am prepared at your command to give what I possess to the poor and with you to follow Christ, letting go of every temporal thing."

And he did just that, following the advice of Saint Francis: he distributed what he had to the poor and entered the Order, and he lived in great penance and holiness of life and worthy behavior.

Chapter 38
HOW SAINT FRANCIS KNEW IN SPIRIT THAT BROTHER ELIAS WAS DAMNED AND WOULD DIE OUTSIDE THE ORDER; AND WHY, AT THE PRAYER OF BROTHER ELIAS, HE PRAYED TO CHRIST FOR HIM AND WAS HEARD

Once while Saint Francis and Brother Elias were staying together with a family at a certain place it was revealed to Saint Francis by God that Brother Elias was damned and would be an apostate from the Order and finally die outside the Order. For this reason Saint Francis conceived such dislike for him that he would not talk or stay with him. And if Brother Elias at times walked toward him, he would change direction and walk the other way so as not to meet him. Brother Elias began to be aware of this and to understand that Saint Francis was displeased with him. So, wanting to know the reason for this, one day he drew alongside Saint Francis to speak with him; and as Saint Francis turned to avoid him, Brother Elias politely but firmly held him and began to ask him carefully that he please indicate to him the reason why he was avoiding his company in this way or even speaking with him. And Saint Francis answered him: "The reason is this: because it has been revealed to me by God that because of your
