MULTIPLICATION OF FOODSTUFFS ON BOARD SHIP.
HOW HE PREACHED THE FAITH OF CHRIST TO THE SULTAN.

9For themselves. As for him, fearing nothing at all, Christ giving the lead,
With his companion, no sailors in sight, went on board ship.
But, lest they want in expenses, behold, there was this man—
And it is believed he was sent by the Lord—that turned up
Bearing food to suffice for them, and to a trustworthy man
Handing it, said to him: "Keep this by you, and to the poor
Brothers that are hiding in this ship deal out what is here,
Apportioning them as much as you shall see what they need."

The Ninth Book

CREATURES OBEY HIM, AND THE GRACE OF HEALING.

25Of winged creatures dares not ignore his orders
That he had learnt they were always silent after his order;
He grieved that they had so broken off for so long a time,
And as he bade them afresh to give their Lord their wonted praise
Their voices were loosed that instant as they had been before.
26Then he makes his way to Greccio

42In servitude to Francis, rather than run away free.
A taming effect on wild beasts even in their savage state
Had Francis's power. Indeed when, playing havoc with animals
And humans, the hostile ferocity of wolves harassed
Greccio's inhabitants, it died down, checked through his prayers.
One wolf in particular through his agency, we are told,
Became a mild creature and with a village was reconciled.a
Not only did brute beasts obey him present in person,
But had obeyed some persons at the mention of his name.
At Parma a swallow was disturbing a certain scholar,
